Weekends at BARC is a volunteer group started by James Oxford and Lance Marshall after their first visit to the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) in Jan 09. Seeing so many animals in small cages, who rarely were given the opportunity to go outside, was evidence that something needed to be done. Within 4 months, Weekends at BARC has grown to almost 500 members, but we can always use more. One day each weekend, 10 - 20 WAB volunteers meet at BARC to walk and bathe dogs, socialize with the cats, and assist potential adopters with finding the perfect pet and helping them through the entire adoption process. The response has been very positive, not only from the public, but the BARC facility itself. There is so much more that can be done, and as our numbers grow, so will our ability to improve the lives of the numerous animals who currently await a new home. The more volunteers that become involved, the more changes we can make. It also allows us to make progress at an even faster rate.
In order to volunteer with any City of Houston facility, you'll need to sign up for a City of Houston Volunteer badge. Follow this link to get started.
