Every year tens of thousands of dogs and cats enter Houston shelters only to be euthanized. The BARC facility alone spends approx $5.7 million tax dollars a year to operate. Due to the large number of dogs and cats going in, and the small number being adopted out, thousands are euthanized to make room for the thousands more coming in. In hopes of educating the public and forming a partnership to work together to not only benefit the animals, but our neighborhoods as a whole, HAPI has begun speaking at various Civic Club and HOA meetings around the city. Our hope is to give each neighborhood the tools to help fight the increase in homeless pets, as well as the abuse of animals. By working together we can improve the quality of life in our individual neighborhoods, not only for our families, but our pets as well. There are also those who do not consider themselves "animal-lovers". But we hope they too recognize that less dogs & cats ending up in city shelters, means less money needed to capture, house, feed, euthanize and dispose of these homeless pets. Which in turn means more money for flood control, more police protection, as well as more funding for schools and other various programs in desperate need of the funding. So no matter your motivation, less homeless pets, means a better quality of life for everyone.
How Can You Help??
- Include a different City of Houston ordinance regarding cats & dogs each time you send out your Civic Club or HOA newsletter, either electronically or print, these ordinances are listed under the City of Houston Ordinances page on this site.
- Include an ad promoting the Spay/Neuter of all pets to those in your community in your newsletter.
- Make responsible pet ownership a part of your community. Notify a neighbor when they have broken a City of Houston ordinance. Often times they are not even aware an ordinance has been broken. This can either be done face to face, or by posting on their front door. Use whatever method is normally used to notify a resident if they have broken a HOA or Civic Club rule. Be sure to list the ordinance broken on the notification.
- Also consider listing contact information in your newsletters for those who need to report animal abuse or animal dumping.
- Hold pet themed events in your community, Pet festivals or pet parades or adoption events, to promote interaction amongst the community.
Overall be informed and educated on the laws!!
Education is the solution!
